What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

A burst pipe is one of the more urgent plumbing emergencies, but a few quick, correct actions can significantly limit the damage before a plumber arrives.

1. Shut off the main water supply

This is the single most important step. Locate your main stopcock and turn it off immediately — this stops more water from flooding the area, regardless of where in the property the burst is.

2. Switch off electricity near the affected area

If water is anywhere near plug points, switchboards, or appliances, turn off power to that area at the mains before doing anything else. This is a genuine safety issue, not just a precaution.

3. Drain remaining water from the system

Once the main supply is off, open taps throughout the house (starting with the lowest point) to drain remaining water from the pipes and relieve pressure on the burst section.

4. Contain and remove standing water

Towels, a wet-dry vacuum, or buckets can help limit water damage to flooring and furniture while you wait for a plumber. Move valuables and electronics out of the affected area if it’s safe to do so.

5. Call an emergency plumber

A burst pipe needs prompt professional repair, not a DIY fix — even a temporary patch is rarely reliable under normal water pressure. Look for 24/7 emergency service, since bursts don’t wait for business hours.

6. Document the damage

Photos of any water damage before cleanup starts are useful if you need to make an insurance claim.

Acting on these steps in the first few minutes makes a real difference to how much damage a burst pipe ultimately causes.
